What else can be used for this, without a key.

The fuel tank access (on false tank) and the right side pocket on mine have a knob molded to part of a key blank to open them.
 
Storage compartment doors on '68-'77 Corvettes use an almost identical lock/latch. The only difference is the Corvette latches are just a wee bit longer than the Goldwing ones. A little creative modifications would have then working just fine. I've pulled mine out of the '74 to check, and they would work. The Corvette latches also come with or without locking mechanisms. Same type of latch was used in the mid '60s- late '70s GM pickups, too.
