1985 gl1200 water Pump - Question

This water pump i have is the newer metal style, after taking off the cover to replace the oil pump shaft seals and orings, i noticed the impeller is kind of stiff and hard to turn....it did not leak before i took it apart since i have had this engine running. My question is...due to all the other pumps i have checked and turned the impellers, it just seems to hard and not like the others i have come across.....is this normal..has anybody else ran into this before, and what was your outcome...replace the seals, the whole pump or just run it.

sheesh cant help ... but stiff sounds like pressure on shaft that runs it ..dont think that good

You are checking this with the water pump removed?

I have replaced 3 with new and they all turned hard.
Could be you have a real low mileage near new one there.

the water pump is still in the housing cover, but it does look like it has been replaced recently, maybe i got lucky and it is a low milage new one...the shaft is not lose and no play, the mounting bolts are new looking and the o-rings were newer looking and pliable.

I'd use it.

If the weep hole is clear and clean, and with no shaft play, yup - I'd use it. If new pumps were cheap, it would be a different story...
