Geesh, no Idea here but do you think the metal is weeping oil or is it being blown into the area, the obvious place would be the valve cover, I might try a cotton swab and rub it along the split between the valve cover and head.
Looking closer the split looks clean, could it be fuel that is cooked down on the hot head?

I'm with Jeff here.Looks like cooked down fuel to me. I never looked that close at mine.

I'm with slab on this one. When my fuel pump was leaking on my 76, it left residue on the side of the motor that looked just like that. I would clean the area real well and then keep an eye on it so see if you can find the source. Maybe some spillage at the pump?

Thanks guys. I will keep on it until I figure it out. I was hoping someone had already experienced something similar and I didn't have to start pulling things apart yet.

Orings on intake runners are leaking. Very common. Also very easy to fix. Maybe 5-10 minutes per runner. Use Viton for replacements - they'll never trouble you again.
:thanks:

Yep, going with Desertrefugee as well. Red eye makes a good viton replacement for those leaky Orings sitting under the intake runners. They are very easy to replace.

I would imagine if liquid passes through, air certainly would. Probably won't run as smoothly as it could (leaner in the affected cylinder) and synching could be challenging. I replaced mine due to very similar fuel stains, but had not noticed any degradation in performance - and only synch'ed after replacement just to verify.

Any lead on replacement orings other than genuine honda would be appreciated :thanks:

Thanks Bronko and Wingrider, I just ordered a set as they said numbers were low and it now appears that there is only one set left. :good: :thanks: :salute:

Glad you got them. If you want Red eye's site, it is located here. He has many things to help our Valks.

:thanks: wingrider I have bookmarked the site as I couldn't find it with a Google search when you first mentioned the seals. I tripped onto their ebay ad ( I need to use ebay.com not our local default ebay.com.au ) and realised who you were talking about. I had just purchased the second last set and came back to CGW and found that Bronko had left a link to it as well :good:

Rich from Red Eye sent me an email advising that he was refunding me $11.70 as it only cost him $1.36 to post the orings to me in an envelope, not the $13.06 shipping that ebay calculated. :yahoo:

Very nice of him!
