Always change the filter with the oil. It may look like it is just "wet" with oil, but there are other contaminants in there that are not quite easy to see with the naked eye, but surely could be working on your engine just like polishing compound works on your paint!
So these filters really don't catch this stuff, it sort of just goes right back where it started? I'm not trying to be smart, a lot of these posts make it sound like they do nothing but slow it down for a while and actually sending everything back into the motor. :headscratch:
Just the opposite Randy! The filters ARE catching stuff, even if you cannot see it with the naked eye. My point is, if you do not change your filter, you increase the risk of this stuff passing back into the engine.

Agreed, but only if the filter is so clogged it has to go into bypass.

My '82 manual lists changing the oil and filter at the same interval:

Filter and oil for me every time. To me, changing the oil and not changing the filter is like taking a shower and not changing your under-wear...
You change your underwear every time!?

Can do that with dust masks too.

okay i will weigh in now ... oil filters should never have been paper they should have been mesh ..nade out of something softer than anything in motor and durable to be cleaned and reused ... they made air filters like that and way back the made oil filters to that way ... there is nothing hard about the job they do ... unless filters are made of paper .... sheesh so many things of today can be bested easy ... this is certainly one for sure .... my 250 hp farm tractor filters were so expensive i could not do it ..fuel and oil ... lucky for me they were in stout containers ...it was very easy to make my own filters... must have put thousands of hrs on those home made filters .....tractor ran great and never had any problems at all from this mod ...with the big drains on the canisters ..i could back flow them easy clean ...was much cleaner job than actually changing the filter that were made for it hands down ...

sheesh i bet ths get slamed big time but thats my 2 cent worth :smilie_happy:

Paper means finer Joe. Filters are all in microns ( as the size that can pass through) and it is a compromise of being too fine and clogging up quickly and too coarse allowing nasties to travel through the oil/ lubrication system. Most used filters that look good to the human eye have still trapped lots of contaminates

Actually, you making your own better performing filters does not surprise me in the least. :read:
One thing I have learned from Joe and other's on this site, and actually have been using more so at work is there are many ways to do things.
Some ways (and generally accepted) are expensive but there are many other ways to get the same result and often better.

Cheap insurance to change the filter. Personally I'm terrible at following the schedule. Oil changes are just whenever I remember to do them.

Am I reading that manual correctly? Change oil and filter at 8000 miles? So, if you change the filter every other time and change the oil at 3000, you are still beating the recommendation.
