new belts after 28 years. it was time to change them

I let change the belts last week on my 86 GL1200A (no able to do it myself), they were 28 years old, still the original ones i've been told (can you see it?). I've the bike 2 years and made 5k miles on it. They also told me another 5k miles would'n go with them. Well, they are down. I also changed all fluids and filters. I have a new bike now!
Thank you to you and to the forum writting about how important to change belts if you do not know how old they are! I buyed a yamaha xt600e from 1991 with aprox. 20000 miles on it for $1000 in a good shape tecs and ok on plastics, this for fun. It's little different to a GL, in every sense. Now I have enough bikes to go through the winter doing some works on them that I think I could manage myself.

It's always better to know for yourself that the timing belts have been changed :good:
 
You don't want them to break, They are inexpensive insurance...Quality belts will last a long time but quality has taken a backseat to production cost and profits these days so I wouldn't try that again.

The new timing belts were delivered by honda. Do you think it's not the original quality?
 
who really knows ...i rode a bike for for 5 yrs with original belts that were 20 plus yrs old then ..i put on over a 100,000 miles on it.... rode it every day....before i changed the belts after laying it down ... and who knows how good the belts are made today ... just a guess in my book ... but i am a firm believer that something happen else where and then belt breaks and that belts are considered the couprit as first thing that happens....thats my take on it ....properly put on and tensioned belts are not under much stress ...these belts are small .. and contributes to long lasting ... but the important thing is proper tension here ...as always this is up to the installer

Reality is there is no way of knowing where the Honda belts actually came from. Just because they say Honda on them means nothing but chances are better they were made to Honda's requirements in materials and quality control.
For that matter, if they are Honda belts they could be 30 year old Honda stock, how reliable are they after sitting for 30 years in a warehouse.
Hopefully climate controlled at least.
 
Pretty much every warehouse I've ever been in and the plant where I work is climate controlled. When it's hot outside it's hot inside. When the day is cold so is the warehouse. :smilie_happy:

Well I meant climate controlled as in maintaining the best temperature and humidity to preserve them.

Does honda, clymer or whoever say after how many miles or years the timing belts should be changed?
I can't believe there aren't recomendations about it, they tell for everything else how often it has to been done... but i don't find anything.
The timing belts that have been in the bike seem to be allright, what tells you they are history?
I can't see any fissures, cuts or whatever.

I knew what you meant. Just having a little fun at your expense.I never really liked the term climate control and I'm a certified HVAC tech.

I thought I saw in one of the manual's the recommendation but I'm not finding it now.
Maybe someone knows and can link the gallery page.
 
Here is what I found in regards to timing belt replacement in the manual
View media item 24446Most vehicles recommend replacement at 100000 klms (60000 miles). Unfortunately with motorcycles it normally takes a lot longer to rack up this distance where in a car you would expect this distance to be covered in 4-8 years. As has been stated numerous times it is cheap insurance to change timing belts if you are unsure of their history.
 
Thanks for it. Now that they are new i would like to know how long i can ride before i have to chsnge them again next time. 60k milles could be about 20 years for me by aprox. 3k pro year. I think this is too long. How many years can i expect they should be ok? After how many years you do it anyway?
