    Cleaning the K&N air filter

My 1980 GL1100 standard came with what I think is a K&N air filter. The PO rode on dirt roads and it was quite oily and dusty. If one is not willing to spend big bucks on official K&N cleaner and oil, what are some substitutes that will do the same job? Or would I be better off with a paper...

    Oil in my coolant

I removed the radiator to access the timing belts, and when I drained the antifreeze, there was about an ounce of oil that drained last. My radiator cap was oily also. How bad is this? I drained the oil and found no coolant mixed in it. Arnold

    1980 Standard running again

I bought this GL1100 on Craigslist for half a grand. PO had crashed it the morning of the sale, so was anxious to sell. I repaired the cracked windshield with clear epoxy, and the windjammer fairing with black ABS cement from Lowes hardware store. The original black paint was well worn, so I...

    Stopping the startup smoke

My 1981 GL1100I doesn't smoke when I'm riding down the highway; but each morning it creates a cloud of smoke. I bought eight valve guide seals from Saber Cycle to fix the problem. At $4 each, plus shipping it came to $39.81. Then I started taking stuff apart, following a Clymer manual. The...

    Choosing the right fuel

What kind of gas should I use in my 1981 Goldwing Interstate? I looked at the label near the right footpeg and read, Fuel: All gasolines, minimum 91 RON. I learned the following from Wikipedia: In most countries, including Australia and Europe, the headline octane rating shown on the pump is...

    Idle jet surgery

Today I pulled two of the pressed in idle jets for a look-see. The attached photos show how I extracted it with a drywall screw levered out with cut-off pliers. You can see gunk protruding from the little side-jet holes. Also notice that the tower the jet came out of was previously...

    Back tire rubbing on fender

Saturday, while riding my 1981 interstate with a passenger and no air in the rear shocks, we both began smelling burnt rubber. At home we saw a shiny black circle around the perimeter of the left side of the tire, where the sidewall meets the tread. It looked about 1/8 inch deep. The fender...

    GL1100 Damaged carburetor

I have this Cen Tech automotive multimeter I bought at Harbor Freight, and I decided to measure the exhaust header temperatures while my 81 Interstate was idling (or trying to idle) last night. I got 240 degrees on cylinders 1 & 2, but only 140 degrees on cylinders 3 & 4. I put a strobe light...

    Water-hammer in my 81 Goldwing

Water hammer is a term used by plumbers when you turn on a faucet abruptly and a loud, stacatto hammering sound is heard in the pipe. That's what my 81 Goldwing sounds like when I transition from idle to higher revs. I almost have to feather the throttle gently to bypass that brief, but...

Small jet in vacuum advance line in 81 Interstate

When I pulled off the vacuum advance hose, there was a hard bump in it. When I cut the hose open, I found someone had installed a tiny brass jet in the line which was very restrictive. Is this stock, or someone's modification? :?

    GL1100 won't idle

I'm Arnold from Idaho and I recently acquired a 1981 Interstate that runs fine on the freeway, but won't idle. I've been researching how to adjust pilot screws and sync carbs. The former owner had it in his garage a long while. I added a few ounces of sea foam to the gas tank 100 miles ago and...
