Any particular reason routing up to Portland?
Hwy from Salem to Bend via Sisters is a beautiful mountain ride.

Leaving Bend there are numerous places to stop over. Couple of good sites around John Day Fossil Beds.

Not sure I can be back in the area at that point but I live there in John Day, Or.

It is all beautiful road. Be sure to get fuel at major towns Like Prineville, John Day, Ontario

This might also help your touring pleasure. The attached map is from Last year but they are usually in places like convenience stores, Subway Sandwich shops etc. Most of East Or, Southeast Wa and Idaho are available in those areas respectively.

Wanted to see Portland but it was a later inclusion. If we are running behind too much we will bypass it. Our next leg to Susanville through Bend I hope covers the road that you mentioned. We appreciate your advice :thanks: :good:

Understood.

Since you are going to come back through Bend, a more scenic route to Portland would be up the Columbia River Gorge Scenic area
You can travel Freeway on the Southside or cross the river and travel a much prettier route on the north side in Washington State.
From John Day to Portland, taking the Gorge route is same miles and same time as Hwy 26 for just traveling through.

Try this for an example although it does a little detouring. https://goo.gl/maps/LHi8V

The pic I attached below is entering Columbia River Gorge heading west on I-84. You can just make out Hwy 14 on the Washington side across the water there. Much better ride on a Motorcycle...

I can probably get more specific if you want it.

Trying to show some good things to see.

Forgot to mention, this is Motorcycle/Farm Country That time of year you are likely to find or join up with many motorcycles riding around.
All the businesses through there cater to Motorcycle/Bicycle riders. They are very friendly.

Do be on the lookout for wildlife, especially in the Deer thirty windows. Typically daybreak until about 9am and late evening from about 5:30 to dark. Lots of animals are moving for water and food at those times.

Ansimp,

Posting a travel update for you.

Keep track of the news for that area. Currently lots of fire activity in the John Day, Or

Right in the center of this picture is the cross roads for US Hwy 395 and Hwy 26 in John Day.

I'll post back updates if things change.

My home there is not threatened at this time, but it is a mess at the moment.

Thanks BigBro! Hope you get some rain to put an end to your fires. Stay safe..
:thanks:

Morning update says the area got moisture which helped a lot.
They noted however, 3 motor vehicle accidents with Elk herds that have moved out of the forest and into the highway boundary between Prairie City and John Day along Highway 26.
They also noted that the general area got over 1200 Lightning strikes last night.

With crews moving out of the area, it should be a good route to take if you choose.
I have found many of those roads, lightly traveled and very nice motorcycle country.

Enjoy!

Thanks guys for the updates. We are revising our trip as we speak. We hope to head north up the coast to SLO or some where in that area. We did a pretty good loop down around Valley Centre Road an the Casino, about 200 mies and we didn't get away until almost noon. After today's outing Dad believes he is good to go :good:
