I have the heads off my 77 and while I am waiting for parts I decided to install another gas tank as my original one has some massive dents in it ???
I cleaned the tank today and then putting the cart before the horse decided to check the tubes and sure enough the reserve tube is blocked solid. I tried all afternoon with a tach cable and a drill to get it unclogged but no good news there.
I am considering splitting the tank and redoing the lines to the reserve screen. Has anyone on here split a tank before??? New used ones are about 100 dollars and it might not be any better than the one I bought last fall. I wish I had the tooling to press out the halves and make new tanks. I could sell a bunch of them but now I am dreaming.
It would be a bit of work but I really think splitting the tank would work. Although it might be much easier just to find another tank.
Or I could just live with the "ON' side only and not have a reserve.

I have some B 12 and will try it.
This morning I got out the original tank from the 77 ( the one with all the big dents) and after making a holding fixture for the vise I cut the tank in half beside the seam. Evidently some PO had used Kreem tank liner probably 30+ years ago and it was nasty inside.
Tank liner might be okay for a regular tank without pickup screens but in my humble opinion never in a gl tank.
The plan is to get a panel beaters hammer and carefully beat out all the dents then after everything is bead blasted inside and out very carefully weld the two halves back together.
I might have to cut off the screen for the reserve line because it is hopelessly clogged with tank liner and rust.
I was going to scrap that tank anyway so all I am out is a little time and it might just work.

Acetone will take Kreem out. I had to use two gallons to remove the crap a PO had put in mine. He had Kreemed the pickups, too but it all came out with Kreem. The reserve screen was so mangled that I removed it and worked a VW pickup sock over it. Did it all through the two holes. Used a USB camera on a coat hanger to see what I was doing.

I ended up using the better tank with the clogged tube, I cut the tube and put in a rubber line and a nes strainer, Kind of like bypass surgery
