Is it normal for the idle to wander a bit? Seems like after riding for awhile my '87 will be idling a few hundred RPM too high, or too low.

I keep a screwdriver handy and adjust, but...maybe there is a better solution?

Carbs use enricheners instead of a choke. It's possible one or two hangs occasionally. Also possible you may have a vac leak when warm.
That said. My idle does vary a bit occasionally by about 200 rpm at times.

Oil viscocity changes idle load, as does friction between clutch plates hot vs cold... and of course, electrical load from fan being on or off causes this variation. I'd look at ignition advance too...
