How much dashpot fluid is needed?

Does any one know how much dashpot fluid (50,000CST silicone fluid) is required in the tachometer?

And How does one put the fluid in the tach? Where does it go?

I have the tach apart.
 
At first, I thought you were looking for prop wash or camouflage paint, but dashpots do truly exist in Honda tachometers/speedometers. Looking @ several sources, fill the dashpot 2/3 full. Fill by inserting a syringe in the original blocked fill hole or drill a hole just big enough for the syringe in the dashpot and fill to the hole. Seal the hole with hot glue, JB weld, etc. after filling.

Most people agreed to not storing the tachometer/speedometer face down.

Looks like you are "boldly going where few people go".

This advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.
 
I have since learned that the fluid is in a little capsule on the shaft of the needle. It prevents the gauge from jumping about.
I have no clue how to fill it yet but I am learning. I may be totally off the mark on this.

The capsule above the dome is where the dashpot fluid goes. Right above the spring.

I wonder how many under 40 have even heard of a dashpot...
I'm well over 40 and I never heard of such a thing before. :oops:
 
Here's a discussion of this topic. The CB750K does have a dashpot containing silicon oil. You may find your answer reading all 3 pages. There are URLs to other threads too.

I think Wilcoy is correct. I thought the thing was a bearing but apparently it's a dashpot and storage of these gauges is supposed to be face up to retain the fluid in the dashpot
 
To me, a "dashpot" has always been a device on a carb to pull, push, or otherwise keep a linkage in a certain spot.....usually vacuum operated. Never heard the term in relation to a gauge, but it sure appears to be a damper for the needle. Larn sumptin new ever day!! :yes:
