Found the reason for the excessive wobble in the handlebars... loose bearing. Made a tool to tighten everything up, but now the rains come. Gotta wait for the test ride.
Steering head Brian?

Yeah... no play in the triple tree, so I just retorqued the bearings and tightened them just a tick more than what the book calls for. I think it calls for 15 to 18 ft-lbs., I went with 22.

Gave it a test ride today between rain storms and the deceleration wobble is gone.

Fired "The Turd" up and let it run for aboot 30 minutes, wiped some of the dust off, and put the new registration sticker on it. :builder: Let it cool back down, then put it back to bed, under cover. :lazy:

...not a dadgum thing. Blame me?

I haven't driven a car in almost 2 weeks, it feels good to be able to ride so much! Even at midnight it's been in the upper 60s on my ride home.

Rode it about 10 miles to fill it up and have a nice little ride after work. Fuel mileage is awful, but it may just be the rusty old engine and rebuilt carbs working in. She still rode great other than poor front braking. Starts good cold or hot, and idles well after a couple minute warm-up.

the wing seemed like the back brakes were in need of replacing so I took everything apart so I could take a look at the brake pads, they were good so I cleaned up the caliper and put everything back together. now the brakes are working fine. Monday I spent some time at cousinjeff's house, he installed the nrely rebuilt Penske shock on the Mighty ST 1300. what a difference in the ride

A tight squeeze past the swing arm but hopefully this will work out. Still need to reinstall and test ride.
On the GL1800 (Sooo much easier to change rear tires because we can just lay it on its side and take off five lug nuts to remove the wheel) we have a couple tricks for the "dark side". #1 deflate the tire! It is surprising how much the sidewalls actually grow when fully inflated. Sometimes just down to 20 psi. #2 plastic garbage bag - lets the tire "slip" past things it wants to "grab".

I have around 60k miles on the "dark side" and the only time a motorcycle tire goes on the 1800 is on the spare wheel while getting a new car tire mounted.

The big orange orb in the sky finally has shown itself and water has stopped falling, last count I think I saw about 9 inches. Of course I rode the 87 to work today. It felt good to be back on the bike and not in the cage. Rain doesn't bother me, but torrential down pours and flooded roads do.

Loaded the Hunley on the trailer and took it to a car & bike (yeah, 3 bikes) show in a nearby community fair. Saw some friends there and made new ones. I had the left side shelter open so folks would see that it is NOT a gas tank. Several asked where the gas tank was. Daughter went with me and probably talked to more people about the bike than I did. Next week the Hunley gets new tires mounted!

You trailered it to the show? I thought only Harley guys did that...
