Ok, this is my third attempt at creating this topic, I think my original pics were too large. . .

As I mentioned in previous posts, a local shop has offered me a GL1200 for me to buy for my build. It's been sitting for a while in their bike storage area behind their shop. It has been in the elements, but it has been sitting upright. I spoke to the shop owner, and he claims it ran with no problems when he parked it. When I pressed him on the issue, he told me that it ran when parked, and was only parked due to cosmetic damage and lack of a suitable buyer. As I'm not going to keep it as a "Full-dresser", I'm not concerned with how it looks for the most part. That being said, I'm not an expert on these bike or what I should be looking for in order to not buy myself a new basket-case.

1) What should I look for to ensure I'm not being screwed?
2) What procedures should I follow to determine the condition of the various essential systems?
3) Is there anything I should be looking for in particular in regards to functionality or condition?

Attached are pictures as it sits now.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated! :salute:

It looks pretty weather-beaten. Wonder how long its been parked in the sun? Another clue is the clutch lever, or lack thereof. If the mileage is low, you can be sure its probably been around once already. Like joe says, don't pay much for it.

The owner is shooting rather high at just over $1 a CC, so I'm going to have to beat him down on it unless he can show it can potentially start. Unless it could actually function, I'm not taking a chance. I normally work with the Shop Manager, who is much more flexible, but he wasn't in today when I stopped by. He might give me a better deal than the Owner. I know I wouldn't want to pull the trigger on it if it wasn't first dug out f the back and at least be proven to to have not leaked everything out, corroded, and rusted into oblivion.

I believe I'd look elsewhere. 1200s are common. That one could be a headache. (They all can be, but why invite trouble?) Be patient. It's hard if you're on the hunt, but you'll be better off if you chose wisely.

I wouldn't give more than $300 for it - and it'd most likely be a parts locker, not a builder.

That's what I thought as well, and from how the Shop Manager was talking, he seemed to be suggesting that it was going to be cheap as well. I think the Owner is simply a bit deluded. I honestly think that the SM will offer a cheaper price. If they hold to the high price, I'll make them miserable fixing it first. I'm not a fool, nor will I make that mistake to become one. If they try to hold to the high price, I'll simply pull up the local Craigslist page and show the similarly priced GL1200s that are in MUCH better condition for around the same price.

If you could ride it home, $1200 is still top end for it. Cosmetically, it's a dumpster fire. Look elsewhere.

I shall keep all of this in mind. . . he has a few wings in varying states of shabbiness, and he seems to want to get rid of as many of them as possible, so I may be able to scoop up at least two to bodge together. . . though he definitely hinted that he may let this one go for less than $500. . .
