I am looking for a ballast resistor for my 1977 GL1000. I have attached a photo, I need the whole thing. Any help would be appreciated.

Or any early Japanese car type. They do have different resistance values so you will need to chase one close to the original GW resistance.

I got 2 one stock 1977 the other from the Dyna Kit. I bought and installed GL1500 coils and no longer need the resistor, which I really recommend if you can do it I only spent 35.00 on ebay and got them in 3 days. I used the GL1500 wires and the GL1000 sparkplug boots,

Depending on where you are at I am heading to Simpsonville SC from Elwood Indiana starting tomorrow if you are along the way you could meet me and have it. Or I could mail it, either way let me know.

That would be great except you are going to be heading away from me. I live in Missouri. If you want to ship it to me, just tell me how much you want and we can make the arrangements.

I received it on Saturday and installed it yesterday. Thank you very much. Unfortunately, the bad resistor was the result of the problem, not the cause. So, I am back to square one.
It seems to me something is causing the ballast resistor to overheat. Any suggestions?
Jeff

Over heat? Those resistors even on cars way back then got too hot to be touched. Check your voltage at both ends of the resistor.

Yeah they do get hot. It is the nature of any resistor. Loose connections can make it worse on heat. Also like slabghost said and since your in there double check the coils. When I installed them gl1500 coils it was a beautiful moment.

Ballast resistors need to be mounted where they can get some airflow. Other than that as others have said - they get hot. Small soldering irons run around 16 watts. The resistor is designed for 30 (although it shoouldn't see that much).

Thank you all for the information. Can someone tell me how to test the coils.

From the '75 - '79 GL1000 manual.

file.php

I saw that in the service manual, but I do not know where to get the service tester. Is there a way to use a multi-meter to test them or is the service a multi-meter?

Just set the multi meter to the correct ohms range.

Figured it out, the coils are only firing one cylinder on each side. Need coils, any suggestions?
