Hi all, my "new" 1980 GL1100 (bought last year) tends to sputter a bit at all speeds, and it is NOT waterproof. Any serious amount of rain will have it losing power and trying to die. That's what makes me think fuel delivery isn't the problem, but I'm not are where to start with the ignition. Is there somewhere obvious to start, or is it just a question of going over the whole system checking connections and specs?

Best place to start is the plug wells in the heads. There is a tiny drain hole that gets clogged. I cleared mine with mig wire. A plug under water doesn't work well.

Sputtering when wet is usually a bad spark plug wire connection. Inside of the spark plug boot, you can pull the wire, clean the end and re-insert.

Both great ideas and you can also use some dielectric grease on the plug wire and cap connections.
