Welcome! While at Purdue I once dated a girl from Floyds Knobs......... Knobs, French Lick, ...... AHEM...... :whistling:

Top end rebuild cost? 82 1100

120 and consistent across all 4 jugs sounds OK, but if it's sat for any length of time, it may have the same issues my 81 has. The rings get a little hung up in their grooves and don't seal up as well after a while parked in a barn. Mine also suffers from a PO who drove it like my grandma, so...

New guy, lots of questions coming

Pic finally..... Circa June -- looks exactly the same now: I still haven't gotten going on this. Have a certain little British car I need to de-body and disassemble some more to clear garage floor space so the GL can go inside for the winter. Should be able to be at it by Thanksgiving...

    Parts questions

I'm figuring no choice on the head gaskets, as the aforementioned DPO removed the left head for reasons unknown. The bike reportedly barely ran when he got it, so he felt compelled to remove a head and see what was in there. I guess he expected to find some profound guidance or something...

    Parts questions

Here's another piccy for those who haven't seen it yet Cosmic black, and I think in pretty decent shape for 31 years old. It seems like it will respond well to a good buff-out and the chrome bits all polish up nicely as well. And yeah, I'm missing the seat bracket/rear fender support grab...

    Parts questions

I'm starting to kind of look around at what's available in the way of parts for my 81 project, which has 17,400 miles showing on the clock. I've had it long enough now to determine the following course of action, in no particular order (remember, it's not running and was last registered like 6+...

If you aren't seen you should be heard.... AKA New Horns

+2 on the Stebel Nautilus. I put one on my Aprilia scooter cuz the horn it came with is the same one they put on kiddy bikes at Walmart... Now when I hit the horn EVERYBODY looks. I have another one ready to go on theGL1100. Wouldn't think of heading off into rush hour traffic...

    Colors of detail parts

My father-in-law had a 75 Antares Red. I used to ride around all over the place on the back with him when I was dating my (now) wife. I blame him directly for the soft spot I have for early Wings. And also for the 81 GL1100 I adopted last month -- all his fault... :salute: Steve

    New guy, new-to-me GL 1100

I prefer them that way :ahem:

    New guy, new-to-me GL 1100

Since my pic posting capabilities are now fixed, here's one to look at. This is after rolling it off the trailer and giving it a quick bath to get the leaves, grass clippings, and other garage grunge off of it: I later buffed up the paint a bit and did some polishing on the chrome just to see...

    De-coking my engine

TOTALLY!!! That's been my thought since I first laid eyes on it! My guess is that it never got out and really stretched it's legs. Ever. Can't imagine how goobered up the carbs will be...

    De-coking my engine

Here's what the combustion chambers look like... And here's the piston side... I've seen worse..... Steve

    De-coking my engine

There's one in every crowd..... On the other hand, this is probably the only time I'll ever get 5 times my investment on this bike LOL :smilie_happy: Steve

    De-coking my engine

My goal? Well, a week ago my goal was to complete some repairs to my Aprilia scooter and continue flying around on it all summer. Then this Goldwing came along... As for the Wing, it kind of fell in my lap and I couldn't pass on it. The guy I got it from inherited it from his uncle, who last...

    De-coking my engine

Slabghost, I was figuring I'd be doing that anyway -- my experience with Honda car engines (or one in particular...) had me thinking these are probably not sealing very well Thanks Steve

    De-coking my engine

Thanks for the advice Aapple. I'll head over to the FLAPS later and pick up a bucket of carb dip! Steve

    De-coking my engine

There is build-up under them, at least the ones on the left side. I haven't opened up the right side yet, but I'm guessing it looks pretty much the same. It's down under the valve seats that I'm wondering about using oven cleaner on. I figure it's caustic enough to clean the burned-on gunk...

    De-coking my engine

Well, I did tell you all I'd be asking lots of questions.... I'm starting to formulate a plan for my newly-acquired 1981 GL 1100: 1) Clean up both heads inside and out; 2) lap the valves to ensure they seat well; 3) reassemble with all new gaskets throughout; 4) rebuild the carbs; 5) replace...

New guy, lots of questions coming

Yeah, near as I can tell it's accurate or at least close. I do know it hasn't been on the road in 10 years, and everything I'm seeing on it indicates it spent a lot more time parked than driving. Steve

New guy, lots of questions coming

Uhh, you don't want these tires. I think the date code on them may be 1986 -- it's "0386"... They do hold air, though, and actually look pretty good although they're a little hard. I figure they'll be OK for putting down a few miles after I get it going and then a trip to the shop 4 miles...
