I had a set of Irridium plugs that shorted out down inside.
They are good plugs but not immune to carbon tracking, happens to all of them.
Glad it was an easy fix after all.

I love irridium plugs but as the GW is so accessable I wouldn't waste the money and just change conventional plugs more frequently
Well one engine I had with a broken oil ring fouled a standard plug almost right away but the Irridiums never fouled. In fact those Irridims that finally shorted were the same plugs 2 engines later.

Like I said I love them in the right application. Conventional plugs are $3 here while irridiums are $15-25 :(

I can't say I went with the heavy artillery, I used a set of NGKs that were $2.75 each. The difference they made along with like $.25 worth of brake cleaner: priceless.

Video comment: old bike + new plugs * (joe + dan + omega + slabghost + AA + zman + steve + asimp) = awesome.

Chris, your carbs are leaking! Listen to your video. Hear that slight stumble/knock sound when you flipped the throttle? That is too much gas already in the intake. This is what I went through with my '81 carbs.

is that what that is Gerry? I have been knocking myself out trying to figure it out. What's the fix for that? Rebuilding the carbs? I have been considering doing that anyway but I've not done it cause well to be honest I'm a little intimidated. I'll recut the video to a different format - i took it with my iPhone but for some reason I can't see it on my iPad. strange days.

Thanks Dan! I got myself a channel as well.

Anyway - i have been scratching my head about that knocking noise - I guess i better read the reference section on rebuilding carbs eh?
A simple thing you should try is to remove the carbs, pull the float needles and clean the tips real good and the seat they go into. Then check to be sure the floats are set at 15mm. The next thing to check is to make sure the needles and seats are sealing are not leaking before installing back on the bike. I do this by using a lawn mower gas tank and a long hose to the carb inlet with the carbs on the floor. (Or up on a table) Just be sure the gas tank is at least 3 feet higher than the carbs to add enough pressure. I pick the carbs up to 45 degrees to simulate the bike in a turn and see if they leak.

Also, be sure you have new O-rings for the intakes when re-installing. The O-rings flatten and will allow a vacuum leak is re-used. If you wanted to, you could bring your bike up this way and we could do these tests.

Also, check your oil level. If it is rising, you have gas in the oil and you WILL wipe out your bearings!

If it does that after warmed it may be time to rebuild. Cold it could have a little extra gas due to using the choke. Very few ever adjust the air/fuel mix screws because they are a pain in the career to get to and you can count on burning yourself on the hot motor.

I agree with Dan's suggestion.

me too i dont think your ready to go after these carbs yet ... if there bad it takes some real reading up on to do ...bigtime ..dont go there till all else fails ..it can be fruitless and very expensive ...and atf might just fix it up

ATF is sitting on the workbench and it'll go in the tank today! Riding tonight, I'll let you all know how it goes. If it works, it'll just stop knocking?
It will work to clean up the carbs nicely over time. Stop knocking? Maybe. Knock could also be ignition timing issue or fuel mixture screw or screws set too rich.

Finally got to see your video which was great but I feel your idle speed is too slow. Run a couple/ three tanks of the magic ATF supplement before you make any changes because that may be enough to free up the carbs and allow better idle speed :good:
