Hey guys. I recently bought a 77 wing from Ebay on a whim. I am 57 and have owned about 30 motorcycles in the past. I wanted a wing for awhile and I didnt want one that was covered in plastic. I off handedly bid on my 77 thinking someone would easily outbid me. It looks new from 30 feet away. So now it's mine. Runs real nice with 29K on it. I need to syn the carbs. One might be off some. It gets 30mpg which is unacceptable since my wifes car gets the same.
I purchased a Dynatek ignition kit. I dont know how to set the timing once I get the points out and the kit in. I was hoping to download a manual or get instructions. Please, if you have not done it do not advise me how..

Welcome to the forums Mike! Sounds like you found a nice standard. Guys that can help will be on before long. Interesting your redoing your ignition. The forums are a buzz about a new ignition for these old girls.

Welcome to classic Wing ownership. Although Dynatek is one of our competitors, you probably weren't even aware you had a better choice in ignitions!

Whether you keep your Dyna or upgrade to the new C5 optically triggered Goldwing ignition, i believe you will find our visual installation guide to be quite helpful in timing your GL.

There are color photographs showing how to find the TDC mark (under the inspection cover at the rear of the engine) and general information you might find helpful.

Another link is to the recent discussions of optical ignitions found elsewhere on this forum...the BEST forum on the planet!!! Good luck and ride safe. :moped:

Thank you for the advice. You have a nice system there. What is the price? I bought the Dynatek on Ebay. $125. I have only owned the bike a week and information on this old bike and upgrades are hard to come by.

You bought the dyna used on ebay? Did it include the coils? I think you need the green 3ohm coils. Not certain though.

The Dynatek I bought was new. Customer service is poor. I called them and was on hold along time. Not very friendly either.

:headscratch: That is very odd. I don't think I've ever heard a complaint like this. I've called them several times and they were quite helpful. Maybe you got a new guy with an attitude? Or by some chance was this "new" dyna bought from a private seller and not dynatech?

I mulled over the difference of magnetic pickup vs optical pickup last night. Over coffee this AM I found myself again making comparisons again. Obviously both are going to work reliably, for a time. I guess it comes down to quality of materials. These Goldwings are not high performance machines but are made to last a long time. So performance under stressful conditions are not as important in making comparisons. Most modern cars and trucks today use magnetic pickup style ignition systems. Reliability is the issue here. Heat is the enemy.
What is your opinion of these two different setups?
I am an Air Conditioning & Heating contractor. Electronics are my background. I believe in high quality parts and reliability, and I believe in paying for the difference. Now I do like new ideas and gizmos. As long as they are functional and reliable.

Yes heat is an enemy for all electronics.
No debate there.

Though optical trigger costs more it seems it's much more accurate.
Magnetic pickup just seems so sloppy supplying an inacurate and varying pulse.
The c5 providing 3 sparks is a big bonus as I understand it.

I'm really not trying to sell the c5 to anyone, the forum has nothing to gain by it other than better running bikes to solve the crappy way these engines run at low rpm and it is big news in that until now, we've been stuck with replacing a worn 1100 ignition with a worn 1100 ignition.

If reliability is your primary concern. I'd stick with the points ignition for now. Carry an extra capacitor and points file and it will always get you home. Setting the points correctly can be a pain but close is good enough to run. The stock mag pick up ignitions also seem very reliable but to my knowledge none has been adapted to the 1000. Dyna ignitions do fail occasionally but their customer care has been good up to now I've read. Now the c5 is very promising and I think the technology is sound. How reliable it is over time though will only be known with long term use.
