John, your welcome to whatever you need from the 2 complete engines I have.
If it ends up you split the case, I'll split them both to send you the best parts.
I have 2 crankshafts with pistons on them also.

Thank you all for help! It would be EASIEST, I think, just to swap out the motor; assuming I can find one. It may end up that I split the cases and rebuild the motor that's in it.

I'm still mulling over what to do... I hate going out in the garage and seeing the bike sit there with it's broken piston staring back at me....<sigh>

:music: Thanks again for all the offers :music:

I'll letcha know-

I would look into this one if it were me John, I wouldn't be too worried about the rust in the picture because it looks to be only surface rust and recent but of course you would be taking a chance. Shipping is pretty reasonable and it sounds like you have been offered another head.

That's a good deal.
I think I'd jump on it.

Piper - I'm at the USO right now, but I'll look over the damaged head when I get home to see if it is salvageable. That short block might be the ticket. Thanks
From the pics, that short block blew the head gasket on #3 cylinder, has an original water pump, used to have leaky carbs, has not had the stator wires soldered yet, gear shift seal is leaking bad, but looks to be cleaner than the '83 engine I got and you heard that one run!

My '83 engine after delivery from PO:

After a little cleaning, parts change and paint:

Need to stick with an 83 engine.
80 and 81 I'm certain will be be geared way too low with a 16" wheel. Not sure about an 82 engine.
Well that sucks, Then I would check the serial number on any motor before purchase to be sure it is an 83 even if it came from an 83. They swap out other then the gearing?

I swapped an 80 engine into the 83 frame that I have been riding for the past 8-9 years. I saw no differance.
The oil glass is the only differance that I learned are different. One is oval and one is square.

Sorry your ride did that to you John.

If you find nothing --- I do have an engine that has been sitting in my garage for 5-6 years. It is not complete but it has what you would need. As a last resort you might ride up and look to see if it would suite your needs. I think you are about 130 miles from me. It would be a nice ride on your new bike.

Let me know if I can be any help.

Do you have the stock 16" rear wheel?
Maybe the trans gears had been changed?

Hmm, well I know I put an 81 engine in mine that I'm certain had never been split for gear work and there was a very big difference in gear ratios compared to the 83.
At that time I put a 17" wheel on which made the ratios line up better. With a 16" wheel ratios were way too close together.
According to the specs I have, 1980 ratios are the same as 81.
It's 82 I'm not sure of.

The 83 oil sight glass is round, about the size of a silver dollar and very easy to read. I've had both 81 and 83 and at 70 MPH, which is 90% of my riding, the RPM differnce is quite a lot. It's one of the reasons I went to an 83.

82 are better than the 80-81 ratios for highway running as there was a 500 rpm reduction at 70mph over the Rats Nest
