What are ya'll using to remove the funky nut on the left side?thanks

Just made a tool for this the other day. Took a grinder to a 17mm socket. Removal with a punch would not be the problem but installing it while holding the inner to the right torque value. The outer nut is a jam but that holds proper preloaded tension on the swingarm bearings which are tapered roller style.

I can post a pic later but i just cut the 4 fingers on the end and a window to insert an allen key and hold the inner at the proper preload.

If you would i would appreciate it.i bought a punch set to remove but your trick to install it sounds good

Someone else made the same tool so I cannot take credit. Forget where I found it tho. I will take a couple pictures later.

Next issue, the punch isnt budging the nut,is heat the next option?

The torque the jam jut is about 80 ft-lbs so I would wait and make the tool to remove it. I used the 1/2" breaker bar to get mine loose. I grabbed the bike as to not tip it so it is on there.

There is a dust/dirt seal on the other side that could be damaged with heat not to mention the grease in the bearing.

This is what I used on my 87 gl1200a. A regular socket would probably have been easier but be careful of the plated sockets as those bits can come off in pieces and be nasty. I used an impact socket that has no plating.
