On a 78 gl1000 where all are the grounds located, besides the battery ground cable on the engine block?
Regardless if I have the stock rectifier and regulator or the new rectifier and regulator built together I'm still over charging. From above idle to 3k rpm I'm from 16v to 17v without anything on as the bike is currently stripped do to rebuilding. Basically just motor and frame, wiring. I soldiered the 3 stator wires and removed the plug, but no changes.

Not sure about the 1000, but the 1100 also has a ground under the tank from the coils to the frame. However, if that ground is not good, the bike would not run. Otherwise, it is only the main ground. Overcharging is often caused by the regulator/rectifier plug connection being dirty. Pull the connector and clean the tangs.

I cleaned that green wire that's bolted to the coil and the battery ground cable. I'll try cleaning the plug you mentioned and see if that helps any. I just swapped out the old rectifier for a new one that has the regulator built in, no change from old set up to new set up, so hopefully it's the plug causing the issue.

Ok, I cleaned the rectifier plug, it was a little dirty and after using cleaner and a wire brush it shines like new. However this didnt change anything. I checked the volts before starting the motor, 12v after starting it stayed at 12v for a little bit then as normal started climbing. At around 2500 to 3000 rpm it charges 16v. So I got to thinking maybe it needed something drawing current like a headlight. So I wired in a spot light fired it back up and it stayed at 14v like it should. I let it run at 3000 rpms for about 10 min and still staying at 14v. What's crazy is I replaced the factory retifier with a combo built in regulator, just this alone it will charge 16v but if I plug in the old regulator with the combo it stays at 14v with a light burning. This just doesn't make any since to me.
