Whine in 3rd gear.

I noticed that my GL1100 has a loud whine in 3rd gear. The other gears seem to be OK, but when I am accelerating and shift into 3rd, I can hear a high pitched whine, especially under load. Is this common, or normal? I wouldn't think so, but it seems like I've seen a comment about it before from others? If it is not a normal think with a Goldwing, is there anything I can do about it? And should I be concerned about it?

My '83 engine does the same thing in third gear. Real loud whine (gear noise). It is just the cut of the gear itself.

My '81 does have an audible noise in third, too... :headscratch:

I can hear 3rd shifting up. and I can always tell when I get back to 1st shifting down...
think its pretty common.

My '81 engine with '83 transmission will make quite a whine in third under load, louder when hot.
Reminds me of a old 4 speed manual with granny low.
