Clutch plates and springs

Is it possible to change the clutch plates and springs on a 1980 GL1100 Interstate without removing the rear wheel and everything in between? If it's not possible, is there an easy way to do the job?

Yes, remove the engine. Before you scoff at this idea, it is actually quite easy with the right jack and a smooth surface. Like the rear wheel though it does take an hour. But then you get to work on the clutch upright
