And so the swap/upgrade begins. A four hand project. Out with the old 1990 engine.

New motor is in. So far the only difference I've found between the 90 and 99 is one of the water hoses that run to the right intake manifold.
Had a heck of a time getting the starter bolted. There's one bolt tucked up almost touching the fuel tank that I fought with longer than I'd like to admit but finally got it tight.
I had planned to have it ready to fire up by Friday but ended up spending the afternoon today replacing the alternator in the wife's van. So I'm shooting for this weekend to have the bike running again.

I always forget how massive those 1500 engines are until I see someone wrestling one into or out of a frame. . .
Hope it solves the problem!

OK Sorry for not updating sooner. The motor is in and running great. Quieter than the 90 and shifts nice and smooth. Installed a shifter pivot which I'm sure contributes to the solid feel going through gears. I checked cylinder compression on the 99 got an average of 220 psi.cold. Low was around 210. The old motor averaged around 170 psi. I do notice a bit more get up and go.
Running short trips right now to feel it out. We have a camping trip to Knoebles Amusement Park in August towing the camper. A West Virginia trip and I might ride the bike down to Ocean City Md. in July. We'll see how it runs in the upcoming weeks. I really hope this is the first and last major repair. I'd like to think this one will last my lifetime. Next project, go darkside.
