Well, ok thanks Dan I got lost and couldn't find this thread....after examining the rear wheel gear splines and the final gear drive I found that the moly paste just had a thin layer left on the gears, I swear I pack it in there, wow, it kinda went away,,weird...I'm not using that paste anymore, I am using the multigear grease stuff instead, I will report back in the winter sometime..On the results from that grease...Oh, I was checking my vacuum advance mod. and it is still fully open or advanced at 3000 rpm..Cool beans...

FWIW the Valkyrie calls for Moly Paste on the final drive, maybe that is where it came from?

And yes...use a brush and just coat the splines, more than that and it slings all over the place.

I don't have my manual with me at the moment, but the Valk also calls for Moly Grease which is prolly the lower percentage stuff on the MSDS posted up.

I wish I had taken a photo when I had my rear off last November, but using the #2 grease, the splines were still greased good and I didn't need to add any. I just wiped out the old grease and put in new. There was about 7k miles on that grease.
Well, in preparation for the trip to the Midwest meet, I decided to pull my final drive to check the splines, grease condition and gear oil. Changed out the gear oil and even after 9,860 miles the grease was still there doing it's job. Just as a reminder, I use #2 marine trailer wheel grease. (No moly 60 for me! :hihihi: )

I know that I once read that it should be moly paste somewhere... (maybe it was on a webpage), but the Honda manual just shows lithium grease, so that is all I use and I just brush it on at every tire change. Since I am cheap and spend less than $100 per tire, I get between 6000 to 9000 miles per tire so I am getting to look at that lithium grease quite regularly.

Somebody started a myth a few years back that it had to be Moly 60, and coincidentally Honda Moly 60. Imagine that.

The result has been finding out that the final drive splines are pretty dang tough and hold up well with no grease being on them.

Wait a minit.....that was YOU!!! :Doh2:

:smilie_happy:

I been using a Moly grease, and it keeps the right side of the tire greased up really well.... :sensored: It's just too thin to stay where it s'pose to stay. A paste might hold up better, but I think a heavy wheel bearing grease would be best...which is what I will be using from now on...

BTW, the trailer bearing grease is a lithium based multipurpose NLGI #2 grease. I got it years ago at Pep Boys for a few bucks per tube. I use the same grease in the zerk fittings for the shaft.
