Some of the solutions are theoretical (meaning I didn't actually try them all).. in particular you will probably wish you had a machine shop if you are boring out the 10mm center of the 015 bearing to 12mm to use a stud.... It is HARD...
 
I like the idea of rebuilding the idler. A couple of things, there is a vast difference in bearings, and buying cheap to me isn't a real good idea. For my shop I always use Timken bearings because they are top quality. Timken is also very good at matching the bearing to the application.

The other thing I noticed in the dyi project was the nylock nut. I don't like them, and you are never suppose to reuse them. I would use a grade 5 bolt and nut with locktite and a jam nut, but that is just me.
