What would you replace when you change a motor?
Here my saga,
1st had water pump go bad and burnt head gasket replace both along with new timing belts, thermostat,,radiator cap and hoses

2nd had no spark thought it was a bad pluses genitor replace it was not it, then thought it was a bad cdi replace it was not it then found power wire coming from kill switch was bad replace it along with a coil mod. got nice hot spark.

3rd had a bad backfire found out you CAN NOT clean carbs. with Napa spray carb cleaner had to rebuild carbs.

4th still had a small backfire Don't trust Clymer Manual it tell you one coil fires 1&3 Cylinder other fires 2&4 WRONG One fires 1&2 other Fires 3&4 only way a found out went to a shop and they had a 86 gl1200 and it was wired the right way change mine' and had carbs. sync had a small lifter knock after about 100 miles with some MMO it pump up

5th check comp. low around 120 all 4 cyls.

6th now after it gets up to temp. I have a small rod knock, Found a used engine a 1986 with 46000 miles on it what would you replace when you change motor? I am going to replace all of new parts off old motor

hmmmmm rod knock ... sheesh no one ever listens but if I were you the one thing id change for sure is id drop the thermostrat ... these motors are way to valuable to be gamble on cheap parts ... its becoming where the gas is so worthless cheap that motor that were made to to gas cant hardly operate on the fake worthless gas being sold today ... its quality of absolute 0 oil content is horrible thing to feed these oldwings ...so for yrs and yrs ive been mixing atf in the gas and go without thermostat ...as far as changing the motor and things to do that will be obvious if you ckean everything up and get a look at everything im sure you see things to do but I wouldn't spend money just to spend money.....but id consider spending some on head gaskets to put on new motor so id could get into the top end to clean it up and to know what I have mileage is nothing to go on as condition ....

I wouldn't be in a hurry to change your current engine. I would run it until it was dead. I am sure that you are down on power and using some oil and more fuel than a fresh motor but is that really such an issue. As Joe suggested run some ATF in the fuel and I would want the rod knock to be a death rattle before I would change out the engine. I would purchase a replacement engine ( preferably in a wrecked bike where you can get it running first and know that you have a good engine) so that you are ready for the swap in the future. With my Pig ( cbr1000f in my avatar) the first thing I did was purchase a parts bike as suggested above and that was 5 years ago and still hasn't been needed yet.

got a [new] used motor a1986 with only 46000 miles on it replace it next week do not want to run old motor to far DO NOt like to be stranded to far from home with a rod out of block :help:

Even with a rod out the block you could probably still ride her home. Pretty solid bottom end you would need no oil and super hot to have that sort of failure.. :heat:
