If it helps any, on the 84S I worked on, the 'black box' was right above the coils.

Thank you Dan. I will email him right away. Keep your fingers crossed because this will help all future Aspy customers with the C5.

I can't imagine the tach signal is any different with the Aspencade as any other.
Connect to that old coil wire with nothing connected between it and the instrument cluster and it should work.

The LCD cluster is the dash readout, speed, rpm, fuel, suspension air pressure when selected, gear, trip odo.

Is there a yellow-blue and yellow-green lead coming from that dash then?
We are looking to connect our tach output to the Honda system but so far can't find the correct lead.

I don't have mine open at the moment, but I noticed this https://classicgoldwings.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=9821&view=unread#unread. Maybe a pm to him? I'm going to be looking in that area (sort of) this next weekend, & if I find out I'll advise.
I'm not sure where your wiring diagram is from, but looking at the service manual (Honda) wiring diagram, the wires you're looking for are at the ICU box, under shelter on top of frame, they go to coils & the LCD readout. There is either 2 wires (each color for 4 wires) from ICU box or 1 wire each color and a splice to get the 4 wires required.

I believe there should be one wire from each coil (the manual came from this forum, not a paper edition).
If we find the coil input there is no reason I can think of to prevent our ignition from operating the tachometer.
The tach might read 1/2 as much (with only one pulse) but we could adjust settings once we get it to work.

There have been about 6 kits sold to GL1200 owners but I'm not sure of trim level or even if they are all installed yet.

Thanks for sharing! This will be nice to figure out for future installations.

I was rereading the posts...the diagram you're referencing has something not right (maybe). Looking at the output wires to coil it shows Blu/Yel & Yel/Blu...after the split to feed coils & LCD, one of the wires going to LCD changes color, I don't think it does, becoming the Yel/Gre. It appears that the '86 Asp is using both coil signals for the tach function, see no other reason for Honda to use both on LCD system for tach and have no other idea what it would be used for (other than tach). Makes me wonder what would happen if one coil signal wire was removed from LCD...get half rpm?

We believe what you said is true, that the tach would probably read half the correct value, although if we got it to read at all, we can adjust tach output using our programmer.

Right now our customer has connected our tach lead to the coil triggers but I think it's not on the "LCD" side of the harness.
Since we live three states away it is difficult for me to help. Inspecting the wire diagram led me to suggest he look for the control box and connect our tach input directly to the box.

I am open to other suggestions since I have no bike here to disassemble and test.

Regarding the 1500 build, some owners have installed this aftermarket trigger wheel. Would this interfere with the programmed C5 curves?

I have been talking with Power Arc about this and Gary thought of a way to trick the dash. You can install resistors where the coils used to be. The computer would send a pulse just as it did before and tach function should be no different than before.

If your existing Ignition in working you can insert 2 resistors 10 - 12Ω 25 watt to substitute as the coils. This will allow for all exiting signals supplied to the
LCD Meter to function as normal. The Aspencade requires that both coil trigger signals be present for the Tach to work correctly.

If the stock Ignition module is inoperable, tachometer signals from the PA Ignition could possibly be supplied to the LCD meter inputs and the
Fuel Pump Relay for proper operation. It will have to be tested to know otherwise understand the LCD tachometer will not work.

In regards to the ignition timing and coil operation our ignition is fully self contained. I don't see where the trigger wheel would cause issue because it would no longer serve a purpose (unless I'm missing something...please enlighten me if I am misguided).

I do not have the 1500 project done but once business slows a bit we'll get back on it. It would be great to have it 100% finished by year end.

Sounds like this should sort the problem, can't wait to try it on my 86a

any progress on the kit for a Valkyrie?
I am presently running a Dyna ignition (which are no longer made) with a modified OEM trigger wheel and adding 10 degree advance at hwy speeds switching off the retard feature. Avg 38-40mpg but always looking for more. :thanks:

Right after we made the new Goldwing kit my co-designer passed away and we got incredibly busy. I am running about a week behind on shipping kits so most likely I will resume the 1500 project later this summer. The shaft needs to be completed and is fairly complex. The 1500 cam is hollow with cross drilled oiling holes that presents a unique challenge, but we've got it figured out (I think).

Hang tight until later this year and I will post news as we complete the project.

my condolences for your lose.

please :beg: keep me informed on your progress, I'm very interested as are members of the valkyrieriders site, esp., the guys with blowers whose dyna's have failed.
Thanks

I had no idea there were others interested.

I've got to make 10 parts at a time so perhaps if a few emails showed up I'd move this up the "honey do" list :laptop:

Thank you for asking and I will try to make this a bigger priority. I love working with forced induction engines!
