no i was talking cooling system... if there is dirt and sludge bad inside motor .....diesel is great to flush notor but its my opinion you can never turn motor over while flusking as this could loosen and put sledge int to oilpump and other places it shouldnt go to ...so if it was me i flush motors like a parts washer ..recycling and filtering sludge out through out the doing it .. then once flushe put oil in and turn by hand till motor has oil pump out all through it
 
Should have clarified better. Diesel for crankcase flush, water for water passages. Agree with shieh on the alum oxide, but could be contaminates from poor water too.
 
Make sure you block under rear wheel to tip bike forward some. OK to use diesel to flush crank. I used brake parts cleaner, non-chlorine type. Mine was not very bad. Pull the rocker/cam covers also. Rinse everyting out until its clean. Think there is a second filter on the right side rear of the engine that you can access by an inspection panel, that needs to be pulled and cleaned as well.

If housing is too chewed up you can get a good one on ebay for not much money.

Thermostat is on top of the engine. you can pull the front cover off and pull the thermostat out. However I recommend pulling the whole thing off of the engine and inspect the 10mm hole, bet it is packed. The 10mm hole starts in the water pump housing and goes through the bottom of the block to the top where it connects with theromostat housing. Mine and many others have had this port completely packed solid. Takes time with long probe and ospho to clean it out. Run a 9mm or 38 cal gun brush down it. Some people have used an old speedo cable and connect to a drill and run it down to rotor clean it out.

Take your time and get everything out of it.
 
Grit in the oil? Do you have the spring inside of your oil filter housing? Only grit you could have would stuff heavier and sinks to bottom and regardless that is real bad.

Thanks. That 10mm bypass hole a couple of you have mentioned seems blocked off on the 1200 and not used in this engine model. Where the large gasket in my water pump kit goes, that hole doesnt go through the aluminum, and no hole in the gasket. And the water pump small cover also has no hole to pass coolant through either. I have a spare 1100 front engine cover and pump cover from a 1980 1100, it does have that passage open in both so I can see what you're talking about, just doesn't seem to apply to the 1200.
I'll still check the holes for crud even though they don't pass through.

I don't know what you refer to about a second filter right rear of engine, any pictures or exploded diagram you can point me to?

I'm about to go buy a couple gallons of diesel and try to wrap this up today. Spent last night trying to get old gaskets off the covers, had to boil parts and use a razor blade. Still more cleaning to do on gasket surfaces, but looks reusable.

I had read this was a two hour job originally, but for me it looks like 2 days might not cover it.
 
Both the 10 mm coolant bypass and the 'second filter' access don't apply to the 1200. Honda did away with both of them.
That second filter mentioned is actually the first filter in the oil pump suction line which is actually a screen and not a filter like an oil filter.

did they change the thermostat with a bypass hole in it for the 1200?
As far as I know yes.
Well at least that is the only way I know of for the 1200's to purge air.

I have the spring but I seem to be missing the washer. Yes its real bad either way... Is there a generic washer I can replace the missing one with?
Just got back from the auto parts store getting new oil,coolant, seafoam, and diesel but forgot about the washer.
 
Front is off engine and two gallons of deisel are being pumped through continuously nonstop with a fountain pump. I expected black fuel in no time, but it doesn't seem to be picking up much color very fast. How long should this take to be sure it gets all the sludge out?

Well I cant eliminate some dripping off the lift, so I don't have forever, it would probably all run out after a few hours.

I have seen the innards of some where the corrosion reminds me of barnacles at the ocean, the stuff you see on some faucets where people have hard water. It crumbles easily. These would by gravity and flow end up there.

And then when all is good, put some 371 cams in those 1100 heads! Yeah!!

There are a number of things I would like to do, cams are worth thinking about. That doesn't sound too hard, too bad I don't have money for them atm because I still have belts to put on, would be good timing. I put on progressive 412 rear shocks but couldn't afford fronts yet. I bought a weber 32dft progressive two barrel to upgrade the single barrel vw carb, but still need a new manifold for it. Need paint, need short fender for the rear and sm for front, need a few decals, need a custom seat, need shifter rubber, need air filter for both carbs, need turn signals, need headlight, taillight, license plate holder, smaller speedometer and tach, new tach cable, thermostat, fan switch... Getting closer though, the list was three times this long at the start of summer.
 
Had to shut the pump off when deisel level got below a gallon or so. Only got 5 hours or so flushing out of that but it did pick up a nice dark coffee color to the remaining fuel. No grit found in fuel so it must have been contained to the pump area or been sucked up by the oil filter. Not sure it had the time or cutting power needed to get all the sludge yet. May have to go get more new fuel tomorrow and run again with clean fuel only to see if it comes out clean.

Oh yes, your 1200 is full of possibilities, ask Joe!

I did already, it was his suggestion to go to the 32dft, and I may not have followed through with fixing this bike up if it weren't for his posts and reading about the potential this has. Shortly after buying this, and finding out how much work and money would be involved to fix it up since it needed so much, I was debating just parting it out and giving up.
