I wouldn't bother with checking compression but if you must do not be surprised if it is low. More often than not rings are stuck in the pistons but will free up and reseat after a little runtime.

OK thing are going slow but going. The more I work on and look at this bike I have to believe that it has less then 32,000 miles (as the odometer says) The motor has not been opened that I can tell, has the factory water pump and the exhaust is clean and solid for being 32 yrs old (garage keep). I will be lapping the valves and putting the heads back on as soon as the gasket kit gets here. Next I will go though the carburetors.

zman the valves were closed on the blown headgasket head

Pictures of the heads cleaned up soon

Got the head gasket kit in and when to take the valves out for cleaning and lapping. The VCT (Valve Compressing Tool) I had would not do the job. Went to HF to find some thing, they did not have a VCT that would work. Found a 7/8 O2 socket cut it down and used it with a C-clamp. Need to clean the heads and lap the valves now.

Got all the valves lapped. On the last one (the #4 intake) I dropped it. .. It is now bent and I need a new intake valve. It must have hit the ground just right or I missed it during disassembly.
Anyone got one that I can buy?

Ultra Sonic and Simple Green cleaned the heads up good, just have to turn them from time to time.
Will have a valve on its way soon. Going to go back and re-check the other valves to make sure I did not mess something..

Not sure how dropping this one bent it but it is bent.

Yea..Those sodium filled valves are pretty fragile if hit just right. Glad you found another and are back on track.

The cylinders on my 1100, the number one is so badly pitted you can drag your finger nail across and catch on all the depressions, I doubt mine will hold a compression.

Mine honed out but was not that bad to begin with. Been out of town and busy with work. Have replacement valve maybe will be able to do some thing tomorrow. Chanced the oil on my KLR today and straightened the garage up.

Weather, Work, and Wife all cooperated today. I got the heads reassembled and ready to go back on the bike with new gaskets, timing belts, and thermostat. When the heads are on I will remove carburetors and clean them next.
