    Brake caliper cleaning

I have a set of brake calipers that are basically clean but the pistons are resisting my efforts to remove them. They have moved since I started working on them and the seals getting shredded as they move. They dont appear to be rusty, so Im thinking that rotting seals inside have jammed them...

    84 1200 Aspencade

This question is probably silly to most of you but Im wondering how much better an '84 1200 is VS my '82 1100. A question full of unanswered questions to be sure but if Im correct the frame is stiffer on the 1200, the wheels are smaller diameter (better low speed handling?) the forks are...

Removing Rust from Gas Tank without removing the tank from bike.

Searching for a good method for cleaning the rust out of my tank without removing it from the bike. I would rather use chemicals than electricity. Can I use a compressor to force air back up through the petcock and into the tank to clean it and the lines? Im trying to avoid removing the petcock...

    WTB GL1100 Exhaust system

WTB aftermarket exhaust system for 1982 GL1100, I am looking for a clean used system. I think $500+ is just too much for the new Jardines' Would like to be in the $150-$250 range. Phil

    New Clutch Springs, orientation

I am installing new fork springs (EBC) and they are painted yellow on one end. In one DIY photo I see that the "rough" edge seems to be facing out/towards the cover. The painted ends are smooth, I am guessing that it DOES matter which way they go in but cant tell by my old,59k miles springs. Any...

    Final Drive O ring discontinued

Having pulled my rear wheel off I wanted to clean the splines on the drive unit. In doing so I noticed that the large O ring (45-50mm ?) needed replacing. Ordered it from my local shop and waited a week only to be told that it has been discontinued. Im thinking it needs to be of high...

    1982 GL1100 Clutch Nut Tool

Having a hard time finding a tool that is designed to remove the clutch nut on my 1100. Lotsa posts on modified sockets but frustrating to find a tool specifically for the 1100. As I measure it the "notches" in the nut are 26mm and the larger outside diameter of the nut measures 32mm. Ive seen...

Top end rebuild cost? 82 1100

My 82 1100 seems to be low on compression, I got 120lbs on all four, well one was 119lbs but very close. The engine has 59k on it. If I have to pull the engine to rebuild it I will have to drop the engine off at a shop. I work too much to get into that. Does anyone know roughly what that will...

    Diehard Battery with 7 cells

I am wondering why there are 6 cells on my battery, all in row as usual but there is an "extra" cap offset from the row of 6 just about at the mid section of the battery making what appears to be a 7 cell battery. Its old and came with the bike so I dont know its history. Is it a cell that...

    Using $12.99 Alternator/Battery Tester

I have one of those inexpensive Alternator/Battery testers. The tester shows both my battery and alternator in good condition. Its one those units with the 6 lights that if all lit up (with engine idling at 2K), the charging system is deemed good. Does anyone have experience with these testers...

    Intruduction

My love for motorcycles started in 1977 and have owned so many bikes that if I listed them here it would look like a hoax...or prove that I am truly crazy. My reasoning for owning a Goldwing over other big bikes(having owned 2 Yam. Ventures, a PC800, Yam. XS1100, Suzuki GS850 and many, many...

    Cooling Fan Reversal

I was reading some info on reversing the cooling fan (on a GL 1800) in order to help it keep the engine cooler at slow speeds. The owner said he installed a manual switch in order to control it whenever he thought the engine was getting too warm/hot. Has anyone done this and is it worth the...

    New Member

Hi, Im Phil, currently residing in Portland, Ore I picked up a 1982 GL 1100 Interstate last Sept, previous big bikes being Yamaha Ventures, XS 1100 and a Honda PC 800. Over the years, starting in June 1977, I have always owned a bike or two and still enjoy it. I commute by bicycle often, so...

    New Member Introduction

Good Morning and Happy Friday the 13th from sorta cloudy/sunny  Portland, Oregon I purchased an '82 Interstate late last Summer and am now in the process of cleaning up the carbs. The bike runs fairly well except for the lengthy, smokey start up procedure, a real pain when trying to get...

    Buying an 83 1100

HI All, I am a few days away from owning my first Gold Wing, I was wondering what may be some of the particular "quirks" there may be associated with a 1983 Interstate 1100. I may remove the factory fairing and replace it with a lighter plexi-type screen, any advice in this direction would be...
