    Fork Seal Replacement, et al.

*I used a length of PVC pipe, with notches cut for the caps, to give me enough leverage to compress the Progressive springs when re-installing the caps. Worked good to get the caps started, then finished with a wrench. Jim

the manifolds and carbs look great! What kind of a buffing machine and wheel did you use?

Mark's Musings for a Saturday Morning

Mark, I have an 83 GL1100I and do not have to remove the guards to take of the valve covers. Perhaps your guards need to be adjusted just a bit, which would make the job easier next time. Fear not. Each task completed just makes us more competent to tackle the next. Jim

    Must Haves

I noted that you are from So. Cal., so you may want to be prepared for when the hot top in parking lots gets too warm it gets soft and your side stand or center stand could sink. I use a simple square of aluminum, with a tether attached to remind me to retrive it before I drive off, to avoid...

    Interesting observation

Most of the Washington crowd have actually lost their marbles.

    Gas Mileage

3400 rpm on my stock 83 Interstate puts me a bit over 65 mph in 5th gear on level highways. So you're getting great milage at a reasonable speed IMHO. Wind speed and direction does make quite a difference in MPG in my experience. Classics, especially when loaded with gear, are not that...

    R&R thermo switch

I read all the good posts about using a GEO Metro switch as a replacement. However, anyone got a tip on removing and replacing the switch without removing the grill/radiator? I can get at the switch by removing the right lower fairing, but don't think I'll be able to get a wrench on it. For...

    shift problem

As noted above, I've had the same issue when getting it on a bit and not being precise. I have found that the oil I use appears to make a difference. I use Golden Spectro when I can find it, otherwise Shell Rotella. Jim

    Wing Security,Keeping it Safe

I've always used a Kryptonite lock which is big enough to go through the triangle molding on the front forks, where the brakes attach, and the front wheel. A cover will usually keep hands off when parked on a busy street.

    No title...just watch.

There's no telling what can happen or when. Gotta stay in a state of grace just in case.

I think this guy is related to the polish air bag testers

 1) there's a place for such experiments, and the kitchen table is not one of them. 2) looks like he constrained the material in aluminum foil, thereby causing an increase in pressure and the resulting explosion. 3) minor candidate for the Darwinism award.

    gloves

Glove liners work for me here in Massachusetts. I've got two types: one are the silvery type that are supposed to reflect heat inward, the other are a blue wicking type. They seem to work much the same. I wear them under either my deerskin gloves or if it's really cold, my faux fur lined...

    Finally got it back together

Although it was but 45 degrees and cloudy here in New England yesterday, it was dry. So I was able to take the Wing out for a test drive on the super slab. Everything worked just fine and I'm still smiling. Got a nor'easter coming through the next couple of days, but it's looking...

    Finally got it back together

I had to replace the waterpump so thought I'd take care of a few other things at the same time: replaced the timing belts, thermostat, radiator hoses, valve cover gaskets, and the spark plug wires & caps (thanks again Jim :thanks: ). What started out to be a weekend job last Spring, got...

    A little seller's remorse.

Never, never, never, never, never sell! Original owner 83 Interstate which I will pass along in my will. Same for my 65 XLCH. Unfortunate past owner of several bikes that I'll never see the likes of again. Jim

    For Pleasure or Necessity?

When gas prices rise to $3/gallon+ then riding the Wing to work approaches economic necessity. However, as noted earlier, riding for stress relief is definitely a psychological necessity.
